James Clapper's triple mission in Ankara

The US National Intelligence Director James Clapper began a surprise visit to Ankara Sunday Sept. 18, prompted by Turkish saber-rattling against key US interests: Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said the information gathered by the US radar system planned for Turkey as part of the NATO missile-shield must not be shared with Israel; Monday, US Noble Energy began drilling gas off Cyprus in defiance of Turkey; and Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas, egged on by Ankara, headed for the UN to bid for membership.

Turkish foreign minister Ahmet Davutoglu

"We sided with the Syrian people because regimes will go but the people always stay," said Turkish foreign minister Ahmet Davutoglu Sunday, Sept. 18 in a bid to vindicate the "zero conflict" doctrine against its many critics. In fact,DEBKA

file reports, most of "the Syrian people" had gone to their graves when Davutoglu made his remark: Bashar Assad and his army had virtually smashed their six-month protest, aided substantially by Turkey reneging on its pledge of military backing for "the people."

US Noble Energy rig off Cyprus shore

Military tension is building up among Greece, Turkey and Israel as Cyprus prepares to start exploratory drilling for gas Monday, Sept. 19 in the face of Turkish threats. All three have placed their air and sea forces in a state of preparedness. Turkish warplanes and fighters kept watch on the rig belonging to Houston-based Noble Energy as it moved from Israel's offshore field Noa opposite Ashdod to Cyprus's Aphrodite field.  US Noble Energy and Israel's Delek are staked in both fields.

Abbas claims 1947 borders for Palestinian state, affirms bid to UN Security Council
DEBKAfile Special Report

Mahmoud Abbas goes to UN

Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas announced Friday, Sept. 16, in Ramallah that he would ask the UN Security Council next week to recognize a Palestinian state. Once they have a state and a flag and recognition, the Palestinians would leave all other issues open for negotiation with Israel, he said. While citing the 1967 borders for a future Palestinian state in reference to his UN application, Abbas stressed that the real Palestinian borders were laid down by the UN in 1947.

Israel and Greece have invoked their new, secret mutual defense pact to counter heavy Turkish sea and air movements in the eastern Mediterranean. DEBKA

filediscloses that Israel may gain the new advantage of a military presence at Greek bases following a long phone conversation Wednesday night Sept. 14 between the Israeli and Greek prime ministers. They also agreed to share intelligence. Israel's expanded cabinet of eight was called into session over the Turkish threat to its off-shore oil and gas rigs.

The Obama administration has turned down a Turkish request for drones or for the deployment of US Predators at Turkish bases until Ankara stops threatening Israel with armed attack, DEBKA

file's military and Washington sources report.  Turkey's lack of functioning drones has crippled its military campaign waged against the Kurdish PKK rebels in conjunction with the US and Iran at a critical juncture. Since expelling the Israeli technicians, Ankara has been unable to operate 10 Israeli-made Heron drones.

Turkey sharply ratchets up its threat of war with Israel. Three Turkish frigates were ordered to the eastern Mediterranean and instructed to disable Israeli military ships if encountered outside Israel's 12-mile territorial waters. This was reported by Turkish naval sources Sept. 12 as Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan was due in Cairo for a controversial visit - in defiance of the Egyptian government's effort to cool the crisis in relations with Israel.

Daily News from Rapture Ready

31 Aug 11

Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana and New Mexico have been caught in a heat wave that feeds on the drought, according to Texas State Climatologist John Nielsen-Gammon. As sunlight hits the ground, Nielsen-Gammon says, it evaporates any moisture in the soil and raises the temperature of the soil. With no moisture, the ground is a virtual hot plate, adding to the misery. That misery is bound to end and the last of the year's 100-plus temperatures may be recorded this week, but this drought will have a ripple effect that will spread beyond the region in the months ahead, having an impact on the one place Americans do not need to feel the hurt: their pocketbooks.

It is axiomatic that in the world of the atheist there is neither morality nor immorality, only amorality. This is often misunderstood to mean that atheists have no values. That conclusion would clearly be erroneous. To associate atheism with amorality is not to say that atheists have no values, they certainly do; amorality is a commentary, not on the existence of values, but on the significance of those values.

Lebanon on Wednesday backed Syria in rejecting an Arab League statement demanding an end to the bloodshed in the country. "Lebanon stands by brotherly Syria and its stance is clear in this regard," Foreign Minister Adnan Mansour told the Hezbollah-run al Nour radio station.

TheWeatherSpace.com Senior Meteorologist Kevin Martin has been working on this code he calls "mother nature's grid" for many years and may be getting close to cracking it. "The formula I developed consists of the size of the storm in diameter and the distance to the strongest part of the upper level ridging responsible for moving in," said Martin. "With this I was able to successfully pinpoint where Hurricane Irene would go when she was exiting Puerto Rico."

While much of the mid-Atlantic and New England continues to suffer from residual flooding and power outages in the wake of Irene, a new storm in the Atlantic bears some watching.

August is ending. Hurricane Irene has left the Washington area. The big earthquake was eight days ago. But its aftershocks linger on. So far, it appears, there have been 19 of them. The most recent, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, came at 9:27 a.m. Tuesday. Its magnitude was 2.1, far less than the 5.8 quake on Aug. 23 that has set off the repeated shaking.

The acting director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), who got caught this year in a firestorm over the Fast and Furious undercover gun investigation, was reassigned Tuesday and will be replaced by U.S. Attorney B. Todd Jones of Minnesota.

Military sources say Israeli Navy sent warships to maritime border with Egypt following intelligence indicating viable terror threat. Meanwhile, Iran set to send 15th fleet to Red Sea as well to 'convey message of peace and friendship to all countries'

We're in the middle of a real-estate depression, folks, and it's not getting any better. Perhaps it's good news that the financial markets have gotten used to the bad news out of the housing market, because the bad news keeps coming strong.

Global Recession Likely, Depression Possible: Economist

Global recession in 2012 is "65 to 75 percent certain" and could deteriorate into a lengthy depression, Roger Nightingale, economist and strategist at RDN Associates, told CNBC. The peak rate of growth for the world's economy occurred more than 12 months ago and "it carries on going down," Nightingale said. "We are probably going into negative territory around spring of next year;

Petraeus leaving Army after 37 years to head CIA
Gen. David Petraeus is bidding farewell to the Army that has been his life and the troops that have been his family for 37 years. America's best-known general is taking off his uniform before starting a new chapter as the 20th director of the CIA next week, where he will keep waging war on al-Qaida and other terrorist groups, but in a far different manner.

Hundreds evacuated as wildfires hit Texas
The wildfire has torched at least 20 homes over an estimated 7,500-acre area in the northern region of the state, according to the Texas Forest Service. No major injuries have been reported. Spokesman John Nichols said the wildfire in Palo Pinto County is threatening 125 further homes in the area near Possum Kingdom Lake.

Iran to dispatch submarine, warship to Red Sea again
Iran plans to once again dispatch a submarine and a warship, to the Gulf of Aden and Red Sea, the country's navy commander said Tuesday. Admiral Habibollah Sayari said the dispatch of the 15th fleet is for patrolling in high seas and displaying Iran's navy capabilities of the Islamic Republic, the news network Press TV reported.

U.S. bill aims to cut funds to pro-Palestinian UN groups
A republican congresswoman introduced a bill on Tuesday, along with 57 co-sponsors, asking Congress to block U.S. funds for any United Nations entity that supports giving Palestine an elevated status at the UN. The head of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen is also seeking to ban U.S. contributions to the UN Human Rights Council and an anti-racism conference seen as a platform for anti-Israel rhetoric.

Israeli military to equip Jewish settlers with gas and grenades
The Israeli military is to train Jewish settlers in the West Bank and plans to equip them with tear gas and stun grenades to confront Palestinian demonstrators when their leaders press for UN recognition next month. The enlistment of settlers, which has already opened with a training session for their local security officers, is part of the military's comprehensive "Operation Summer Seeds" for dealing with possible violence as the UN considers whether or not to recognise a Palestinian state.

Katia gaining strength, could become a hurricane
Tropical Storm Katia is gaining strength as it moves quickly across the Atlantic and could become a hurricane later in the day. Early Wednesday, Katia's maximum sustained winds are near 65 mph (100 kph) with additional strengthening expected. The storm's forecast track shows it could become a major hurricane over the weekend.

US officials quit over Mexico gun flow probe
The acting director of the US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) and the US attorney in Arizona are resigning over a botched operation to track the flow of guns to Mexico. The ATF's Kenneth Melson had recently faced pressure by Congress to resign. Operation Fast and Furious saw US agents allowing thousands of guns into Mexico illegally with the hope of tracing them to major arms dealers.

'Egypt won't amend Camp David Accords without Israel'
Any amendment to the Camp David Accords, the agreement that ended decades-long hostilities between Egypt and Israel, must be made in coordination with the governments in Cairo and Jerusalem, Egyptian newspaper al-Youm as-Sabaa reported Tuesday. ...While the noise outside the Israeli embassy in Cairo has mostly quieted down, and the blue-and-white flag flies once again on the embassy building, the issue remains contentious amongst many Egyptians.

Lebanon backs Syria in rejecting Arab League statement
Lebanon on Wednesday backed Damascus in rejecting the Arab League's call to end bloodshed in Syria, according to a report by DPA. "Lebanon stands by brotherly Syria and its stance is clear in this regard,” Lebanese Foreign Minister Adnan Mansour was quoted as telling Hezbollah-run radio station al-Nour.

China announces support for Palestinian UN statehood bid
China's Foreign Ministry said in a statement Thursday that Wu Sike, its special envoy on the Middle East, told Palestinian leaders in a meeting in Ramallah that Beijing and the Chinese people have always supported the Palestinian cause. The Foreign Ministry statement said Wu expressed understanding, respect and support for the Palestinians' bid for statehood.

Hurricane Irene set to hit New York this weekend: City 'preparing for the worst' says Bloomberg
New York is getting ready to face Hurricane Irene, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Thursday. Speaking at a press conference outside St. Luke's Baptist Church in Queens, Bloomberg said the city was keeping a close eye on the storm's progression and making sure it could cope if heavy rains and up to 60-mph winds arrive this weekend. "The city has already seen the power of Mother Nature this week," Bloomberg said, referring to the earthquake which shook the city Tuesday.

Rocket Fire on Southern Israel Continues. Iron Dome Activated Again
More than 20 rockets were fired on southern Israel from Gaza during the night with strikes on Beersheva, Ashkelon, Sderot, Ofakim, Netivot and villages in the region. An 11-month old baby was lightly injured by the blast on one of the kibbutzim in the area. Damage was reported to a house in Sderot this morning. The Iron Dome defense system successfully intercepted rockets that were fired on Beersheva and Ashkelon.

China's navy adding 'high-tech' weaponry, Pentagon warns
CHINA's military is increasingly focused on naval power and has invested in high-tech weaponry that will extend its reach in the Pacific and beyond, the Pentagon says. China has ramped up efforts to produce anti-ship missiles that could knock out aircraft carriers, improved targeting radar, expanded its fleet of nuclear-powered submarines and warships and made advances in satellite technology and cyber warfare, the Pentagon wrote in an annual report to Congress.

Ahmadinejad to Syria: Killings 'serves Zionist interests'
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad called the Damascus regime to engage in dialogue with the Syrian people in order to put a stop to the violence and reach an understanding regarding the political reforms in the country, Lebanese Al-Manar television reported on Thrusday. "The people and government of Syria must come together to reach an understanding," he told the station, which is run by the Iranian and Syrian-backed Hezbollah movement.

Quake Exposes Post-9/11 Cracks in Cellphone Coverage, Emergency Response
As dazed workers streamed out of evacuated office buildings Tuesday following an earthquake along the East Coast, many resorted to Tweet, email and text to communicate with the rest of the world. In the immediate aftermath of the 5.9 magnitude quake, cellphone service was a traffic jam.

Israeli experts near completion of Jerusalem walls restoration
Israeli experts are nearing completion of an ambitious restoration of the five-century-old walls of Jerusalem, the holy city's dominant architectural feature and a unique record of its eventful and troubled history. ...Israeli archaeology and other work in east Jerusalem has often been contentious, because it implicitly asserts Israel's ownership over a part of the city where Palestinian leaders hope to establish a capital.

Ahmadinejad: Iran is determined to eradicate Israel
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said that Iran was determined to eradicate Israel, ISNA news agency reported Thursday. "Iran believes that whoever is for humanity should also be for eradicating the Zionist regime (Israel) as symbol of suppression and discrimination," Ahmadinejad said in an interview with a Lebanese television network, carried by ISNA.

Strong 7.0-magnitude quake shakes Peruvian Amazon
The 7.0-magnitude quake's epicenter was near the town of Pucallpa, which lies some 370 miles from Lima in a sparsely populated central-eastern region close to the Brazilian border, the U.S. Geological Survey said. "There have been no damages reported, either to structures or to people," said Javier Urrelo, head of the government's civil defense agency in the Ucayali region, where Pucallpa is located.

Five killed in Gaza as rockets hit Israel despite truce
Israeli air strikes have killed five people in Gaza, while a barrage of rockets fired by Palestinian militants into Israel has wounded a baby. Two Islamic Jihad leaders died and three civilians, one of them a tunnel smuggler, Palestinian medics said. Meanwhile, Gaza militants have fired 19 rockets and mortar shells into southern Israel since Wednesday, the army said.

Is Germany a true friend?
Next month, New York will host an event marking the 10th anniversary of another dark hour, the notorious UN-sponsored Durban world conference on racism, which became a platform for some of the world’s worst human rights abusers to call for Israel’s destruction.

Aftershock rattles US east coast
